How long does it take to move house?

This guide explains how long the physical move can take, whether you are leaving a room, a flat or a full family home. It breaks the day into loading, travel and unloading so you can plan around keys, parking and access.

01 / How long should you allow for moving day?

If you have not moved recently, it is easy to picture the drive as the main part of the day. The carrying and loading at one end, followed by unloading at the other, may take much longer than the journey itself.

These broad windows are useful for planning time off, parking and help. They are not quotes or promised finish times, because two homes with the same number of bedrooms can involve very different loads and access.

Broad planning windows for the physical move
Type of move Time to allow What that assumes
A room, studio or light flat move A few hours to half a day Packed belongings, a short route and easy access
A furnished flat or smaller home Half a day to a full day A clear inventory, ordinary access and no long key wait
A fuller family home Allow the full day Everything packed before collection and access ready at both ends
A large, long-distance or difficult-access move A full day or more The move may finish later or use a separate delivery day

These are planning bands, not industry standards or Porta time commitments.

02 / What is included in the moving time?

Count the day from the first item leaving the property to the final check at the new address. A realistic estimate has four separate parts, and the drive is only one of them.

  1. 01
    Loading at the collection address

Walking through the property, carrying each item out and arranging the load safely in the vehicle.

  2. 02
    Travelling between the properties

The actual driving time, including the route, traffic and any planned stops.

  3. 03
Getting access to the new address

Parking, collecting or waiting for keys, entering the building and confirming where items need to go.

  4. 04
    Unloading and checking the vehicle

Carrying everything inside, placing it in the right rooms and checking that nothing has been left behind.

03 / Why can a flat take longer than expected?

A flat may have fewer rooms than a house, but that does not always make it quicker. Shared doors, lift bookings, narrow landings and long corridors can slow down every trip. If the vehicle cannot park near the entrance, that extra walk is repeated for every box and piece of furniture.

Quicker access

Ground floor, parking by the entrance, clear doorways and a short carry from the room to the vehicle.

More time needed

Upper floor, small or booked lift, several fire doors, tight turns and parking away from the building.

Doorways, corners and the route to the vehicle all affect how quickly bulky furniture can be moved.

If you are moving from a compact property, the one-bedroom flat removal guide explains how the inventory and access change the job as well as the price.

04 / How much does distance change the day?

Distance adds directly to the moving time, and all the loading and unloading still has to happen. A three-hour drive sits between those two parts of the job. Traffic, ferry crossings or a route that needs an overnight stop can also affect whether delivery on the same day is practical.

For a smaller load, a flexible delivery window may make shared vehicle space possible. That can suit some long-distance moves, but it is a different arrangement from having a vehicle dedicated to your chosen schedule. Our guide to part-load removals explains the trade-off.

05 / What happens if the keys are delayed?

On a purchase, the legal completion and the physical move happen on the same day but they do not run to the same clock. The new keys are normally released after the seller's solicitor confirms that the completion money has arrived. Until then, the moving vehicle may have nowhere to unload.

06 / How can you stop moving day running late?

You cannot control the traffic or the exact moment a key is released, but you can remove many of the delays inside the properties. The aim is not to rush the lifting. It is to make sure the route is clear and every item is ready before the move starts.

For the jobs that happen before and after this one day, use the moving house checklist. It covers the weeks before the move, the old-home handover, address changes and the first jobs at the new property. If packing is still ahead of you, see when to start packing to work backwards from the collection date.

Moving faster is never worth an injury. Heavy or awkward items need the right help and a safe route. The Health and Safety Executive's manual-handling guidance explains how to reduce the risk from lifting and carrying.

07 / How does Porta arrange the move?

Porta is a booking platform that connects customers with vetted independent drivers and moving partners. For a smaller move, start with Small Removals, enter both addresses, list everything that is going and explain the access and lifting help required. You will see the fixed price before you book.

A full household move may need a custom quote instead. Start on the Removal Services page to choose the route that fits the load. Whichever route you use, accurate details make it easier to match the job with the right vehicle, help and schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to load a removal van?
Loading may take a few hours for a small, fully packed move and considerably longer for a furnished home. The amount being moved, the number of people carrying it and the route from each room to the vehicle all matter. Stairs, a small lift or parking away from the door can add more time than expected.
Is unloading usually quicker than loading?
Unloading can be quicker because the vehicle is already packed and the items only need to travel one way into the property. That is not guaranteed. Stairs, long corridors, unclear room labels or difficult parking at the new address can make unloading just as slow.
Can you move house in one day?
Many local house and flat moves can be completed in one day when everything is packed, access is ready and the keys are available. A large load, a long drive, restricted access or a late key release may mean a later finish or a separate delivery day.
What happens if you cannot get the keys on time?
The moving vehicle may have to wait until the seller has left and the keys are released. Ask how waiting time is handled before booking, keep your solicitor or estate agent contact details with you and avoid putting essential medication or documents in the moving load.
Does packing count as part of moving day?
Packing counts if it is still being done after the move has started. Loose belongings also take longer to carry and load than sealed, labelled boxes. Unless you have specifically arranged a packing service, aim to have everything packed before the vehicle arrives.
How does Porta work out what is needed for a move?
Porta uses the collection and delivery addresses, the full item list, access details and the lifting help requested. For a smaller move, enter those details online to see the fixed price before booking. Full household moves can be discussed with Porta for a custom quote.
