Wheelchairs get refused by parcel networks more often than people expect, and the ones that do get accepted go through a sorting hub on a conveyor with everything else. Spokes, brake levers and armrests are what come back broken, because something heavy landed on the box.

Powerchairs over 80kg
Tilt-in-space and heavy-duty models that do not fold at all. These need the ramp and usually a second pair of hands: add the two-person option at the quote stage, and put the ramp in the notes box so the driver knows before they set off.

Before the driver arrives
Four minutes of preparation, and none of it involves a box.
Take the cushion and anything loose
Cushions, bags, trays and oxygen holders all travel separately or not at all. They are the things that go missing, and a pressure cushion is expensive to replace on its own.
Footplates off, or swung in
Leg rests and footplates stick out further than the chair does and take the first knock. Most detach in seconds. If they do not, swing them inward and tape them.
Fold it if it folds
A folded chair is a smaller, safer load and easier for one person to secure. If it has quick-release wheels, taking them off shrinks it again and protects the spokes.
Say if it is electric when you book
Not because it is a problem, but because the weight changes what the driver brings. A powerchair booked as a manual chair is how a job goes wrong before anyone has lifted anything.

A manual chair is around £59 on a local run of about 30 miles and roughly £111 over 200 miles. A powerchair over 80kg is nearer £86 locally and £195 long distance. The price follows the postcode-to-postcode distance and is confirmed in full before you book.
What is the cheapest way to send a wheelchair?
Being flexible on dates moves the price most, because it widens the pool of drivers already making your journey. A folded manual chair costs less than a powerchair for the obvious reason. Getting it to ground level yourself can avoid needing a second person. Porta will not always be the cheapest quote you find, but the figure you see is the figure you pay.
Can you move an electric wheelchair?
Yes, including powerchairs over 80kg. The battery stays in place for road transport, the chair travels upright and strapped at the base, and heavier models get the ramp. What is not covered is anything needing a lorry, a tail lift or a crane.
Do I need to take the chair apart or box it up?
No. It goes as it stands. Take the cushion and anything loose off, fold it if it folds, and that is the preparation done. There is no packing requirement and no box to buy.

From the door as standard, and a single driver will help where it is safe to. Stairs, tight landings and anything genuinely two-handed need the two-person option, and that is booked in advance rather than asked for on the doorstep.

Yes, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, seven days a week. Longer routes cost more because the price follows the distance, but nowhere is off the map.
