Sending a scooter should not mean taking it apart
Most networks will either refuse a mobility scooter outright or ask you to crate it first. Porta moves it as it is. A driver already heading your way collects it from the address, straps it upright in the van, and delivers it to the door at the other end.
That matters more than it sounds. Every handover is a chance for a tiller to get knocked or a footplate to snap, and a scooter that has been through four depots has been lifted by people who have never moved one before.

Pavement and boot scooters
The 4mph class 2 models that come apart into a seat, battery and base. These are the easiest to move and the cheapest to send, because one driver can load them without help.
Road and 8mph scooters
Larger class 3 machines with lights and a longer wheelbase. They do not dismantle, they are heavy, and they need a ramp. Put that in the notes box when you book so the driver knows what is coming.
Heavy-duty and all-terrain models
Wider wheelbase, bigger tyres, often 150kg before anyone sits on it. These are a two-person job almost every time, and the ramp is not optional. Worth measuring the doorway it has to come through before you book.
Mobility aids and walking frames
Rollators, walking frames and folding aids. Light and compact, so distance rather than size drives the price, and often worth sending alongside a scooter that is already going.

How to transport a mobility scooter
Four things worth doing before the driver arrives. None of them take long.
Take the battery out if it lifts out
Most pavement scooters have a removable battery pack. Lifting it out drops the weight considerably and means the battery travels separately rather than shifting about in the base.
Know when to use freewheel, and when not to
The freewheel lever releases the motor brake so the scooter can be pushed up a ramp instead of driven. Put it back into drive mode once it is aboard, because in freewheel there is nothing holding it. Straps do the real work either way.
Fold or remove what comes off
Tiller down, seat off, armrests folded, basket removed. Every piece that comes off is a piece that cannot snap, and it makes the whole thing easier to strap.
Photograph it before it goes
Two minutes with a phone, all four sides. If anything is marked in transit you have a before, and it makes any claim straightforward rather than a discussion.

How much does it cost to transport a mobility scooter?
The price follows the postcode-to-postcode distance and the size of the machine, and it is shown in full before you book. A pavement scooter on a short local route is at the cheap end. A road-legal 8mph model going the length of the country is the other. There is no separate handling fee added afterwards.
What is the cheapest way to send a mobility scooter?
Being flexible on dates moves the price most, because it widens the pool of drivers already making your journey. A folded manual chair costs less than a powerchair for the obvious reason. Removing the battery and having it ready at ground level helps too. Porta will not always be the cheapest quote you find, but the figure you see is the figure you pay.
How do I arrange collection and delivery?
Put both postcodes into the quote form, say what you are sending, and choose your level of cover. That is the booking made. Drivers pick up jobs that suit routes they are already running, so you are matched rather than left waiting for a slot.
Do you cover the whole UK?
Yes, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, seven days a week. Longer routes cost more because the price follows the distance, but nowhere is off the map.
Can the driver collect from inside the house?
From the door as standard, and a single driver will always help where it is safe to. Getting a heavy powerchair down a step or out of a first-floor flat needs the two-person option, and that has to be booked in advance rather than asked for on the day.
Is my scooter insured while it is being moved?
Goods-in-transit cover is included on Standard and Premium bookings, along with SMS updates. Essential is the stripped-back option for when you want the lowest price and need neither.
How quickly can it be collected?
It depends on a driver already heading that way, which is usually days rather than weeks. If it genuinely has to move today, book it as a same-day courier job instead, where the timing is guaranteed once a driver is confirmed.
Is there a weight limit?
The limit is the van rather than a number. If a driver can load it and secure it, Porta can quote for it, and that covers every road-legal scooter and powerchair we have come across. What is not covered is anything needing a lorry, a tail lift or a crane.
